The Wrong House

I had a critical job to do at work in the morning and was unusually interested in what time it was, so as not to oversleep. During an attempt to wake up and check the clock, this experience occurred.

Begin:   I awoke in bed in a usual sleeping position and looked to the side to find my clock. It has a round electroluminescent panel for a face and glows as a pale green disk, except when the power failed or it is covered by a pillow. It was not there. A clock was there, but of a different kind, and too dark to read. I tried to turn on the swag lamp hanging over my bed, but it wasn't there either. Instead there was an arm lamp affixed to the wall on either side of the bed. I rolled to the other side and found another clock on the floor where my telephone normally was. It too was unilluminated and unreadable, but the alarm worked when I pulled out its tab. I could not figure out how to turn on either of the lights.

I got out of bed and walked down the hall, through the kitchen, the dining room, and into the living room. It was definitely the same house, but was outfitted much differently. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was torn out except for several studs near the outside wall. The work intended appeared quite different from what I had actually done in my waking world, and not nearly so far along.

The living room was furnished with several chairs and other furniture, all of good quality but antique, and in various styles. I believe there was a baby grand piano against the east wall where the fireplace is now, taking up a large part of the room.

At this point my mental contortions finally found the right version of the house and I woke up in the correct version of my bedroom. I could tell by the clock.

End.

The entire experience was extremely vivid, but darkness and the short time prevented me from making a detailed examination of my surroundings. The arm lights were set up so two persons could read in bed, although there was not another person there. Reading in bed was impossible with my single swag lamp. I was definitely the occupant of this house. The bed and some other details were identical to in the waking world. It occurred to me this might have been how the house would have been had Paula stayed with me.

Later note: swag lamp destroyed, see 27 February 1983 dreamlog.
