Burrowing Goby

Pile of Burrowing Gobies [Trypauchen vagina]

This fish is native to the coasts and estuaries of the Indian Ocean from Southern Africa around into the West Pacific as far as New Caladonia, from China in the North to Tazmania and New Zealand in the south. It has also reached the Mediterranean through the Suez Cannal. It grows to about 8-3/4 inches long. It lives in burrows in sandy bottoms. Omnivorous, it mainly eats small crustacians that pass by its burrow, but also other conveninet items.

The photo shows a pile of Burrowing Gobies for sale in a market in Goa, on the west central coast of India. They are popular all along the west coast during the monsoon season, and also on the southern coast of Pakistan.   Photo by Joegoauk Goa distributed under license Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike v2.0 Generic.

Buying:

These fish are not currently available in the Asian fish markets here in Southern California, so I have no information on cooking them. I think they are not spiny like some gobies, and because their size is so small, they are probably cooked whole, but this is just conjecture.
