Order Brassicales - Family Tree
The Order Brassicales contains a huge number of very diverse
plants. One family alone, Brassicaceae, contains over 350 genera
and some 3000 species, many of which have been important in human
survival and are still mafor vegetables in our markets. Some others are
decoratives and others just plain weeds. I have listed here only
families, genera and species that are significant for human consumption.
Some species within Brassicaceae show tremendous variation
with different "cultivars" within the species appearing to be completely
different plants. This variation is the result of human tampering over
thousands of years, breeding separate lineages of the same plant to
emphasize particular desirable characteristics. The wild cabbage in the
photo at top left has been breed into head cabbage, cauliflower,
broccoli, and other groups of cultivars.
