Switching Engine, etc.

Again, a large number of long complex dreams that were poorly remembered. One involved a house, mine I think, but not my awake home, and some large animals. At least one was a goat.

Another dream involved a complex of railroad tracks and a small switching engine. the engine was not of the current type, but more reminiscent of European engines of fifty years ago. The area was located near the ocean, and a very large restaurant was nearby. I wandered around through this area, including through the restaurant, and through a short railroad tunnel, but I do not know what I was looking for. I did feel a bit out of place. The engine driver told me I could come and learn the trade from him if I could get union approval, but that was hard to get. I did not wish to become an engine driver, but I thanked him anyway.

Another dream was at the ocean. Part of the time I was on the beach with people, but some of the time I was swimming in the ocean trying to catch the waves just right to get a ride out of them, just as they were about to break. Some were fairly large, about five feet high or so.

In the last remembered fragment, I was reading a very abbreviated version of the Users Column in Byte magazine, in which Jerry Pournelle apologized for his recent untimely death. If he actually does die within the next six issues (Byte has six month pipeline), I will consider this my first prophetic dream ever.

2023:   Byte magazine was the largest and most prestigious of the many computer magazines that existed in the late 1970s and through into the 1990s. Byte magazine ceased publication in 1998, but Jerry Pournelle didn't actually die until 2017.
