Karen in Hiding

This dream was obtained in compliance with a homework assignment by Oh Shinnah Fast Wolf, given on the first day of her three day workshop at the Ojai foundation. We were requested to: (1) Go to sleep with a crystal in our hand. (2) Try to remember a dream. (3) Write a poem immediately upon waking up and before tending to any of the normal physical functions.

Immediately upon arriving home I washed the crystal in saltwater to clear it as best as I had time for. I felt this necessary as I had used it to clear out a headache immediately I acqired it.

I went to bed at midnight and slept quite well despite holding the crystal in my right hand. It did work as a good reminder of the assignments I had been given, so, periodically, when I noticed it in my sleep, I looked for dreams. All I found were single images of objects from the past, so I opened a mental register for these. Whenever I was aware of the crystal I would check to see that the images were still there, and file the next one with them. I did, however, manage to pick up a dream too.

Note:   In keeping with my conventions, names, places, etc. bracketed thus, (xxxxxx ?) are not intended as literally accurate, but carried the appropriate emotions and imagery of the dream.

Begin:   I was in a home I owned somewhere near (Burbank California ?). It had no resemblance to the home I live in during waking life. (Karen Lynn ?) had recently arrived and was hiding from whatever situation she had left. She had brought a child about one year old or less.

I was washing old paint from some art equipment I hadn't used for years, working in a small sink. I had started on a very large Prussian blue glob when the phone rang.

As soon as I could wipe my hands and turn off the water I answered it. The person on the other end was (Dr. Lynn ?), (Karen's ?) father, enquiring after her whereabouts. I could tell her mother was in the background as well. In a fairly long conversation I explained I knew nothing about her and hadn't seen or heard from her for many years. I did not have any idea what her situation was, or even where she had been living.

This conversation was nearly done when (Karen ?) entered the room with her child. I was afraid the child would cry out and blow here cover, so I covered the handset with my hand and waved it at her, saying urgently, "This thing is live". She went to the other phone and listened to the conversation a few moments and then spoke. I just hung up my phone and started getting ready for visitors. (Dr. Lynn ?) arrived very quickly because the distance was so short - I was just putting on my shoes.
End.

At this moment the crystal reminded me to check the registers, and as I did so, I realized where I was checking them from. I thought, "Hey, I've got one!" and woke up as quickly as possible, pulling it through behind me, to record it in my waking memory. Of course the registers I had been checking were wiped by this process.

I returned to sleep, and the crystal left my hand until dawn when the doves woke me up with their cooing and fighting.

The poem is recorded as POE00003.MSS (apparently lost).
