The Chain Letter

On 11-10-1982 I returned home from work and sorted through my mail. In it I found a hand addressed envelope which proved to be a chain letter. This was not your usual send some money to the top address sort, but opened with a verse from the New Testament (Matthew) stating that everything desired is to be prayed for. A lengthy explanation followed about how, within 96 hours, the receiver must mail out 20 copies and vast good luck would come. Examples were given of this good luck, and examples were given of the disasters and death that had befallen those unwise enough to not mail out the 20 copies.

It struck me that this was a very Christian document, bearing a message of love, light, and good fortune, backed by a death threat to enforce the version of love and light being promoted. I was not about to send out 20 copies and expose my friends to this threat. On the other hand I did not desire to accept the threat myself.

The letter did not have a particularly powerful feel to it, but it is better to be safe, so I prepared a spell-breaking. I poured ample salt into a ceramic bowl. I folded the letter into a double fan shape and placed it over the salt. I then lit my evening fire and performed my customary evening rituals, with additions to suit the occasion. At the correct moment, I took a burning stick from the fire and set fire to the letter. When it was completely burned, I stirred the ashes into the salt and covered the bowl. The salt and ashes were now to be returned to the Earth. The ritual felt properly done.

Begin:   During the night I had a dream sequence involving making deletions on the word processor and printer. These deletions were successfully made, and I took this to indicate my subconscious was satisfied the spell had been properly broken, for it had that feeling at the time.

End.
