The Policeman

Begin:   This dream opened into a completely enclosed shopping mall of vast size. It was bright and modern and at least two floors high with many skylights and an open layout. The predominant colors were white with silver trim and lots of clear glass and mirrors. I was walking through the mall through fairly light pedestrian traffic and exited into a normal outdoor parking lot divided up by planted areas. I looked to the left at the hills above the mall which were of the normal Southern California sort. I thought it was a shame that they would probably soon be built over with structures like the mall. Apparently there was considerable bitter controversy about this development and I may have been associated with an anti-development faction.

I found my little orange truck in the parking lot and was headed for it when I was stopped by a fairly large man in a brown leather jacket with zippered pockets. He identified himself as police. He demanded my wallet and anything else I had on me for his examination. I handed him the wallet and he reached into my pockets to find what was there - only a few coins and a comb. He handed back my wallet, which I put back in my pocket, and my keys. When I asked about the rest of the stuff, he gave me my comb, then poured the coins into my hand. There was now a joint among them. I told him, "Get lost!" and flipped it into the ivy.

The officer? turned and went to his vehicle, an older station wagon of domestic manufacture, faded blue in color. He opened the door, sat on the edge of the seat, and reached for a microphone. While I fumbled the key into the lock on the truck, I heard him tell someone named Florie about being back soon.

Fadeout.

While I was recording the portion where I exited the mall and looked at the hills, many fleeting images appeared from dreams that involved similar hills or settings. None were firm enough to record.
