The Vikings

My impression is the setting of this dream was Scandinavia, probably Norway. I feel this event was placed in a time of social change, from the old order to what was to become the Viking era. The name Ursi used here may not be exact, but is very close if it is not. The very attractive young lady involved was neither a major participant nor an object of contention, appearing only in the final sequence. The dream was long and complex, and there were some introductory sequences that are imperfectly remembered.

Begin:   There was disagreement among the chieftains, especially a powerful group of older chieftains led by Ursi, and another faction consisting of one older chieftain and several younger ones, myself included. The factions differed not only in age, but also in dress. The older group wore a mixture of furs and iron, while the younger group wore lighter cloth outfits and gray woollen capes with fancy edge trim. They were of fine quality, bespeaking some wealth.

Not satisfied with the result of argument, we took to our ships and departed. These were similar to the familiar Viking ship, but were of lighter and narrower pattern, more typical of pre-Viking times. We had cloth lined steel helmets (without horns) and large round shields. These were piled along the centerline with the other gear, rather than fastened to the rails. Once out on the open sea, we maneuvered the ships into a cluster and waited long in heavy fog, drifting over slowly rolling swells. Finally, we made a surprise return, coming quietly out of the fog. We engaged in a short sharp battle in which Ursi was killed.

We immediately began preparation for departure on some sort of expedition, with the victorious faction in command. A difference of opinion now arose between the older chieftain and the younger ones within this faction, particularly with myself. The older chieftain considered Ursi to be disgraced, and his people to be left home on the farm. We younger chieftains considered Ursi to be worthy of a place of honor despite his defeat, and insisted on including his ship and people in the expedition.

After considerable negotiation, but without further fighting, Ursi's ship, the fanciest of the fleet, was manned by his remaining crew, mostly younger men. After yet more negotiation, a young woman, younger than twenty, with long blond hair and a single very thick braid, was packed up with her fancy cloaks and gear. She was installed in the stern alcove, just behind the steering oar, sort of as princess in command in Ursi's place. She may well have been Ursi's daughter. the fleet now maneuvered into formation for departure, with Ursi's ship near the center where it's relatively weak crew would be protected.

End.
