Andrew Grygus - Dream - 12-?-1974                       #11

This dream was recorded in January from notes set down the day of the dream. It was not completely coherent, containing a number of dislocations in time and space, which are preserved here.

I was an officer aboard a small submarine, about World War I size, but of about World War II sophistication. We were submerged and under attack with depth charges.

Lapse:   The submarine was badly damaged and forced to the surface, but in the water a torpedo was running. The torpedo's destination was a small ship, similar to a submarine chaser of the PC-461 class (steel hull rather than wood hull PC-497 class). The torpedo struck near the bow at about station #2, blowing the hull open up to the deck.

Lapse:   I was on board the damaged ship, helping its (Japanese?) crew try to keep it afloat. Heavy equipment was being removed and rolled overboard to increase stability. The ship was down badly by the bow, but staying afloat due to watertight bulkheads, and still had some power and control.

Long Lapse:   I was on shore looking towards a tidal inlet where a grounded ship, probably the one appearing above, was being quickly torn apart by waves and current.

Long Lapse:   There were some subsequent sequences involving aircraft carriers and the end of an (Asian?) war.

End.

I was reminded in reviewing this dream of another Asian war dream (exact date unknown), in which the (Japanese?) had occupied the coast of (California?). I was a fugitive in this dream, and had not only the (Japanese?) to worry about, but strafing by aircraft from unoccupied territory.

My position seemed rather difficult, if not hopeless, as control was very tight and remaining at large very difficult. I did, however, have the feeling the invaders were in trouble too, with their positions being eroded by continued harassment. The strafing aircraft I saw were large fighters with a single radial engine, similar to a Grumman Hellcat or Republic Thunderbolt.
